As an old pupil of Harwich County High School I have very fond memories of "Tommo" as we knew him back in 1950-1955 before I dropped Latin to do Sciences in the Sixth Form. He taught us well, made both the language and the history easy to learn. I can still quote parts of The Aeneid which was our book for O Levels and I remember some of The Gallic wars. In its own unique way, understanding some Latin has helped with other languages and the derivation of many words in the English Language. Back in the '50s we were streamed - the A stream had Latin and the B stream Gardening so they missed out on having lessons from Mr. Thompson. Is it my imagination or was he ambidextrous? My 83-year-old memory recalls Mr. Thompson writing simultaneously on a chalk blackboard in Latin with one hand and the English translation with the other - or is this a false memory? RIP Tommo, I will remember you until my number comes up. Thank you for letting us know what a great life he had outside of Harwich County High School.
